Reading is Fundamentally Stupid

By Frank DeFelitta (1982)
This dumb bitch is reincarnated again? This could go on forever. If you don't remember Audrey Rose, she was the little girl who burned alive in a car wreck and then got reincarnated as a completely different little girl. After lots of screaming and hollering and general hullabaloo she just died again though, so needless to say it was all pretty pointless. At the end of the story they put reincarnation on trial and found it guilty of being a stupid-ass thing to make a book & movie about, but it made a lot of money anyway so naturally here's Part 2. It starts when the dad of the second dead girl flips out and they have to throw him in the loony bin. The wife tries to help him by tracking down Audrey Rose's dad, who's hiding out in India with some monks. "I need to be where there are no women!" he says. Amen, brother. Two seconds after she gets him over here though he runs out on her, goes to Pittsburgh, and starts some happy-hippie "love therapy" hospital. That's great, idiot, but you know what works even better than love? Medicine. If you think any of this sounds interesting, don't be a sap: most of this book is just people wandering around. In the first part the crazy dad wanders around New York, in the second part his wife wanders around India, and in the third part the other guy shows them both up by wandering around Florida, Kansas City, Wheeling, and Pittsburgh. Fucking vagrants- why doesn't anybody DO anything? At the very end the dad finally takes some christing initiative and escapes from the nuthouse; of course this involves even more wandering around, but at least this time something actually happens when the asshole finally gets where he's going. I wish I could say the same thing about this stupid fucking book. |
