Reading is Fundamentally Stupid

Ghostbusters II

By Ed Naha

(1989)

One advantage books have over movies is that you can take the time to explain shit that seems stupid when you just watch it happen. For example, say in a movie this chick is running away from a guy with a chainsaw, but she refuses to take off her high heels so eventually she trips and he catches her. Pretty retarded. But then maybe you read the book, and in the book they explain that the girl is really fucking stupid, plus she just bought those shoes and OMG they were pretty expensive. So now you understand and it's isn't quite as ridiculous. This book doesn't do that though. In fact, in this book several things make less sense, like the part where Ripley shows up late for work, works for less than five minutes, and then leaves for a personal appointment. We know she won't fuck her boss, so she keeps this job how? Here's the other major stuff that's different from the movie:

  • There's a few dumb gags about opening up a Ghostbusters gift shop and the Ghostbusters getting new, neon uniforms.

  • The Ghostbusters get a call from this businessdude who needs help because he suddenly has Firestarter powers. Their solution? They punch him out, carry him off, and we never see him again. Jesus Christ, what the hell did they do, murder the guy?

  • One of the Ghostbusters gets possessed by the evil painting they're investigating and tries to drive the Ghostbustermobile into a tree. (Fuck you, spellcheck, I'm positive "Ghostbustermobile" is a word. Also "spellcheck".)

  • There's some additional idiot crap with Slimer (you know, from the cartoon) in an attempt to make the story more appealing to dumb babies.

  • There are several parts that clearly explain what the connection is between the river of slime and the haunted painting. I'm thinking, I dunno, maybe they should've put at least one of those in the actual movie.

  • The nerdy lawyer guy's cousin is the one who actually bails the Ghostbusters out of the loony bin.

  • The mayor's dick assistant gets eaten by the slime covering the museum.

  • And, finally, at the very end, the black Ghostbuster mentions that he can't swim. Of course.

They didn't make the black guy a total racist stereotype though. I mean, at least he has a job. And isn't afraid of ghosts.
