Wow, a whole society where media is illegal. What the hell would I make fun of then? Politics? That would never work- I'm just not that bad of a writer. The main guy in this movie is a media cop whose job is to bust people caught distributing old episodes of Silver Spoons and whatnot, but one day they decide to send him undercover into this other city/country/province where media is legal, where he gets addicted to Lifetime and shitty soap operas and puts on a bunch of weight. Ha ha! Seriously though, a bunch of stuff happens and it turns out his crooked bosses are actually using media to control his mind. It's basically a dumbed-down Max Headroom (which of course was a dumbed-down American Flagg), but at least it has the decency to assume that we're smart enough to figure it all out without spoon-feeding us everything like a baby, or some creepy paraphilic infantilist dressed as a baby. There's lots of oddball actors on the payroll too, like Majoy from Sledge Hammer! as a janitor who witnesses the assassination of a Ronald Reagan-looking president (via plastic-bag-over-the-head on live TV! Now that's an assassination.); Tugwell from Cast a Deadly Spell as another short, tough guy; and Laura Palmer's hagged-out, over-acting mom as a hagged-out, over-acting mom. It's all kind of boring, but it never quite crossed the border into Pissing-Me-Offville, so I'll let it off with a solid C and a "Let's try harder next time."
