If you've never heard of the Rooks, they're a power pop band that sounds like the Beatles, which needless to say I can't exactly get behind since I only like five Beatles songs and can never even remember what all of them are at the same time. Let's see... there's "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"... "Let It Be"... uh... Well, I'm pretty sure the other three are about drugs. At any rate, since this dude's band sounds like the Beatles naturally his solo shit sounds like John Lennon, or at least I assume that's his angle here. Frankly my biggest clue was the little colored sunglasses. Then again, all non-dead punk rockers and power poppers become country or folk singers eventually,* so maybe that's what he's going for. I mean, it's not exact Utah Phillips, but I define folk music as "acoustic and I don't want to listen to it", so as far as I'm concerned a lot of these tunes qualify. That's not to say they suck or anything (I really dug "Folk Hero", for instance), it's just that I have better things to do, and while I'm doing them I need a soundtrack that's got a little more kick to it, like Sigue Sigue Sputnik or the screams of the dying. You can't be a supervillain and sit around listening to hippie music all day.
