I never understand scenes in movies where people are engaged in some complicated activity but have to stop because it's time for the kids to go to school. Are there really entire families who roll out of bed at 4 AM on a weekday so they can get some snowmobiling in before breakfast? Then again, this movie does take place near the arctic circle, so maybe they're smack dab in the middle of 47 days of sunlight and decided to just stay up straight through. Sleep deprivation would certainly help explain the complex, detailed hallucinations where they visit "North Pole City" and meet Santa Claus. Not to mention everyone's obsession with some evil, behind-the-scenes mastermind they call "Gaylord". For real, this Gaylord character gets accused of everything from kidnapping to dosing people with hallucinogens to trying to trick an oil company into drilling in the wrong place, but we never once see the guy and as far as I can tell he doesn't actually exist. Hell, by the end just about everyone in this movie meets or at least sees Santa Claus, but we never once lay eyes this Gaylord joker. As for Santa, I did dig his setup, what with the Star Trek transporter mounted to his sleigh and the super-cool reindeer that look like something out of an old-school Sinbad movie, but man, I just couldn't get past the rest of these crackpots and their paranoid Gaylord delusion. There is no fucking Gaylord, damn it.
