This hick burg has a policy: one in, one out. That means that every time a baby's born, somebody else has to die. It sucks, but it could be worse: at least there's no cover charge. Everything runs smoothly enough until one day when this Census Bureau guy shows up, which is pretty much where the movie blows it because honestly, no one takes the census seriously so the idea that he might somehow screw everything up is kind of hard to swallow. Frankly, I've never understood why these evil little towns can't just learn to curtail their shady/illegal/supernatural activities while nosy outsiders are creeping around. Really, if they would just show a little self-restraint and wait a few days before they held their death lottery or sacrificed someone to the soybean god or whatever things would probably work out a lot better for everyone. And for that matter, why is it that the outsiders never adopt a "when in Rome" attitude and just go with the flow until there's a decent opportunity to escape? Instead, they always feel the need to sound off immediately ("Are you all out of your fucking minds?!"). Really, I'm all for speaking your piece, but when you're outnumbered by crazies a hundred or more to one, righteous indignation will get you nowhere.
