(1982)
The kid in this cartoon special has an imaginary friend, a talking duck named "Mr. Nobody". It seems harmless at first, but as he gets older he starts blaming things he did on the duck. In short, it's a full-blown case of multiple personality disorder. When his parents try to put a stop to it he lapses into a clinical depression and finally has a complete psychotic break and becomes convinced that he's visiting the "Fantaverse" with hippie drug icon Puff the Magic Dragon. After a long, symbolically externalized struggle with the self, he realizes that "Mr. Nobody" was part of him the entire time and, like the heroine of Barbara O'Brien's Operators and Things, manages to piece his shattered psyche back together and begin to live a normal life. Huh. Pretty strange subject matter for a children's program. |
