(1968)
"Salt" is famous black person Sammy Davis Jr., and "Pepper" is one of the white guys who used to hang out with him and Frank Sinatra. See, it's ironic. Salt and Pepper own a sketchy night club, and the movie kicks off with a reasonably funny bit where this police inspector assures them that there are very few unscrupulous cops on the force but he's one of them, so they better watch their asses. Now, if you've ever seen a movie before - or been hassled by the pigs yourself - you know that this is the cue for everything to go to shit in a fuckbasket, and that's exactly what happens when not one but two dead bodies turn up in their place. As it turns out one of these corpses is was a secret agent, and before long our two main guys are caught up in a sub-rate James Bond type adventure that would barely pass muster as a gimmick episode of a bad sitcom where the main guy dreams that he's having a James Bond type adventure. There are a couple of subtle jokes along the way ("Ask for a close shave."), but things mostly proceed in a slapsticky fashion: there's a zany chase with a car that shoots out oil slicks and smokescreens and all that tired bullshit, the dickhead inspector's car is accidentally exploded (twice), a bomb comically goes off in the police station, and so on and so forth. In the end this is one of those movies that's kind of likable without actually being any good, and whether you dig it or not will depend almost entirely on how much you're into Sammy Davis Jr. and the also-ran cats from Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack. That's right, it's Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack now, just like it gradually became Scandal featuring Patty Smyth and, ultimately, Patty Smyth and Scandal. Hey, it never hurts to let people know who's in charge.
