(1939)
Wow, approved by the Legion of Decency. This should be sexy. It starts by saying that it's the "historic and authentic account" of the song "Silent Night, Holy Night", but then we get into a bunch of rigmarole about this old goat who's all p.o.'ed because his daughter wants to start a family with some joker who fought for Napoleon, and if there's one thing he hates, it's that son-of-a-bitch Napoleon. He just never got over the siege of Toulon. She goes through with it anyway and the old man disowns the lot of them, but suddenly years later there's an avalanche! I hope you're following this, because I'm not. The family loses everything and goes to the old man for help, but he tells them to fuck off so they end up sleeping in a barn. Fortunately for them though the local padre lays a major, and very public, guilt trip on the old guy at Christmas mass, so he caves and, presumably, writes them a check or something. And that's the true story of "Silent Night, Holy Night". Apparently. |
